The holidays are a mixed bag.

If you’ve been reading this week, you’re aware of my overwhelming joy and gratitude for my family and our traditions.

At the same time, we’ve had some friends leave us in the recent weeks.

It’s harder to write about these, and I’m aware it’s not as enjoyable to read. When we lose friends and family, especially at this time of year, it becomes a tightrope to walk with contradictory feelings flowing.

For many of us, this time of year offers a visceral reminder of those no longer here combined with the joy and celebration of the season. It’s a moment-by-moment challenge to be present amidst all the conflicting feelings triggered by everyday life. It’s an unpredictable roller coaster ride which leaves its passengers on edge to the sights, sounds, smells, tastes and feels which can trigger an abrupt mood change at any moment.

May we all practice grace as we navigate this season. Though Hallmark would have us focus on the storybook vision of the holidays, most of us are navigating a reality far different than what’s offered in the Lifetime movies.

May we also be a space for the dynamic tension between the spectrum of emotions present. The joy and grief we experience are touchstones to our humanity.

May we proceed with grace and care for each other.
