Tackling Inequality in America Today
At the time of recording this podcast, we just passed Juneteenth, and the civil unrest resulting from the wrongful death of George Floyd is still running rampant. Social injustice and race are sensitive topics that many people want to tiptoe around. But Lorenzo Jones is not afraid to talk about them. Lorenzo is an African American male, a kick-ass executive coach, speaker, facilitator, and trainer with more than 20 years of experience. He has worked for massive brands to help their teams identify their strengths and areas of growth to increase focus, productivity, and discover their sense of purpose. Right now, brands are reacting strongly to the racial tension in the U.S. There are a lot of things that need to be fixed in corporate America, and Lorenzo joins us to talk about the work he is doing at the forefront.
Get Uncomfortable
Lorenzo wants to invite people into the heart of transformation by creating a connection with their passion, their purpose, and their unlimited potential. I can’t think of a time in history where that would be more important than right now because our lives are on the line. People are taking a personal stand to finally say enough is enough, and you are seeing this resonate into the corporate world as well. Business leaders are rethinking the effects they have, not only on the people they employ but the communities they operate in as well. That is the arena in which Lorenzo thrives, and lately, he has been pushing the envelope with amazing results. Many of us can benefit from being uncomfortable, but when we breach that barrier, we can finally achieve that sense of empowerment.
Every Worldview is Different
We often overlook the wide variety of worldviews that surround us when we are a part of the majority. In companies made up of predominantly white employees, people forget that it is an entirely different experience for employees of other ethnicities. Taking the time to proactively understand another person’s worldview can help us develop our effectiveness as we interact across difference. And while it might make us uncomfortable to acknowledge that, think about how uncomfortable it is for others every day. No one should feel that they are not welcome in the group, regardless of if it is coming from their inner voice or not. That is going to require deep change, and professionals like Lorenzo are making that much more feasible.
