No Opting Out #101
As you know, I began this blogging journey at the suggestion of Seth Godin in his blog. I am reflecting on my learning and observations every 50 posts to record my own musings along the way. (Please see blogs 50 and 100 if you’re curious).
Last week, Seth posted another wonderful 2 x 4 to the head for me in his “The Solo Marathon” blog. It’s worthy to note the ending for all of us. As entrepreneurs, leaders and owners, we can’t leave when things get tough. We don’t do it for the crowds cheering, we aren’t performing once after months of training.
We do it day after day, often hearing more of what’s wrong, what’s not working, what others want/demand/request of us and our businesses. We are expected to praise and celebrate others, acknowledge their contributions and offer rewards for excellent performance.
We help people and solve problems. Occasionally, recognition follows for us and our teams and the best leaders defer the praise to their team and those around them.
Truthfully, it’s a noble and worthwhile journey. And, it’s lonely.
When the pressure is on and things don’t work, it’s up to you to fix it. Others quit when it’s challenging, you get to double down. There’s no opting out.
The discipline, strength of character and resilience you gain are not “ordinary.” Leading is all about focus and sticking with it when it would be easier to give up. That’s why most people opt for the medal.
